The W2MMD WinLink gateway provides local communication among southern New Jersey stations, allowing remote users to connect on the local VHF frequency (145.03) and send WinLink traffic through the internet connection at the clubhouse. It also allows HF users to connect on 7.104 mhz. Importantly the HF station provides connectivity in case of an internet outage at the clubhouse. In that case messages places through the VHF gateway are forwarded on HF to a remote station that may have internet connectivity or who can forward the station through additional HF stations to its eventual destination. In that configuration it operates as a “hybrid gateway” on the RMS Winlink system.
The gateway runs on an Atom-powered mini-PC using a Masters Communications audio interface and Icom ID-880H for VHF communications and a Yaesu FT-857 and the SCU-17 audio interface to a MFJ automatic antenna tuner. Antennas are a multiband VHF vertical at about 50 feet and a long-wire antenna.
