The Othernet satellite project delivers news and other related content via geostationary satellites to small self-contained radios located anywhere in the world. The objective of Othernet is to make information accessible to anyone, particularly those in remote areas having little outside access. The Skunkworks Othernet receiver looks like the one below. The antenna is mounted on the Skunkworks tower and pointed at the AUS satellite. The receiver is mounted in a 3D printed case on the wall of the Satellite room.

Although the receiver contains a small touchscreen the primary access method is through a web page hosted by the Othernet computer. That page shows the content that has been downloaded from the satellite (which constantly updates the information on the Othernet computer). Two interesting content sources are the news feeds from many different sources, and a Wikipedia that’s constantly updated apparently with entries that are frequently requested from Wikipedia users (the image below was taken shortly after Larry King’s death).

One fascinating feature is the retransmission of APRS messages from terrestrial amateur radio stations that add the work “outnet” to their beacon texts. Through gateway stations these APRS transmissions are uploaded to the Othernet satellite and beamed throughout the world (note the W2MMD-13 beacon in the screen below).
