Networking Infrastructure

The complexity of the computer configuration at the Clubhouse requires a complex and robust networking structure. The basic infrastructure at the clubhouse contains more than X different devices, many of which require routine backup and monitoring. Multiple VLANs are in place to provide isolation and security, a Synology NAS server is used for satellite image storage and backups, and a Dell server running VMware provides hosting for high-intensity tasks such as creating videos from the GOES satellite images.

Initially the Clubhouse networking hardware was located in an unventilated closet that became hot in summer months and occasionally cooked networking equipment so in 2019 it was moved into a Trip-Lite server cabinet located in the air conditioned VHF/Satellite room.

The cabinet also hosts several components of the AREDN network being built by the Skunkworks team. Visible in the photo below are the IP phone and a Raspberry Pi computer on which the local AREDN PBX is running. The cabinet also contains several AREDN nodes that communicate with those mounted high on the VHF tower, with the cabinet-located nodes providing access to computers within the clubhouse.
